Toddler Talk -- By Amma(Mommy)
Senthil and Nithya came to visit and they were leaving.
Ram(her Dad) said to Sanjana(he was kidding ofcourse): "I am going with them to their house"
Sanjana(After thinking for a minute) : "But she(Nithya) already has a Mama(Uncle)(meaning she
already has a husband. Why are you going there ?)"
Sanjana and I(her mom) went shopping and I was looking for a Wok as a Father's Day present
for Ram. But I couldn't find the one I wanted. So I said to Sanjana "May be we should go home "
Sanjana(loudly) : "But if we don't buy a present for Appa(Daddy) he is going to cry"
Sanjana and I were going to India on vacation for 1 month. Ram had school.
So he had to stay back. A few days before we left he was feeling very sad and said to
her "What am I going to do here without you ?"
Sanjana : "You have to water the plants here Appa"
Sanjana was putting the United States Map puzzle one day and she picked up "Pennsylvania"
and said "Pencils live here Amma(means Mommy). That's why it's called Pennsylvania "
Sanjana calls her Father "Appa" and I call him "Ram".
When Sanjana was 2 yrs old I was teaching her to tell her full name which is
"Sanjana Simran Ramrajvel". I said "Sanjana Simran Ramrajvel"
Sanjana : "Sanjana Simran Appavel"
(I was immediately reminded about the kid who said "Mommy can you get the "Daddy Mustard"
instead of "Honey Mustard" )
When Sanjana was 2 yrs old we were going to downtown by train and Sanjana wanted to go to
the restroom. So we found one on the train. We waited for a while since it looked like
someone was inside. But we didn't hear anything for 10 minutes and
I said "I am not sure if somebody is in there " and Sanjana immediately bent down and peaked
under and said "What is he doing there Amma. He HAS to come out ".
Sanjana and I always played what I liked to call "Brain Picking" games in the car. One day
when she was 3 1/2 yrs old we were playing this game called "Who am I". For instance
I would say "I am the biggest fish in the sea. Who am I ?" and she would say "Shark". After
a while she would make up questions and I would answer them. Here are some questions that
she asked(I forgot a lot of them, these are the ones I remember)
1. I live in a nest. Who am I? (Ans : Bird)
2. I am pink. I roll in the mud and I say Oink Oink. Who am I?(Ans : Pig)
3. (This one is the coolest)...I am big and I cook. Who am I?(Ans: Mommy)
note : you will understand the following joke
only if you know some Indian languages
hint : In Tamil "Poo' means "Flower' and in Kannada "Kakka"
means "Poop"
One day Sanjana went to her friend Prateek's
house for a sleepover. There are so many different languages in India and
Prateek's mom speaks Kannada. So Prateek knows Kannada. We speak Tamil. So
Sanjana knows Tamil. Prateek's mom told Sanjana to teach Prateek how to speak
Tamil. So here's how it went..
Sanjana : "Prateek. Do you know what "Poo"
means ?'
Prateek : "I know what "Poo"
means. It means 'Kakka"
